Helping Leaders Know Themselves To Grow Themselves

Three Simple – But Powerful – Questions

Several years ago I worked with a school to improve teaching and learning. We established weekly departmental or area meetings of the faculty to respond to three simple, but powerful questions. The regular discussions around these three questions made a huge improvement in teaching and learning.

As I reflect on that experience, I realize that the three simple questions would be great for personal reflection and growth. Here they are:

  1. What’s working? At this point in time, I’m sure you can identify one or two things that are working in your life. Articulate them. Celebrate them. Give yourself a high five. These one or two things are evidence of your self-efficacy.
  2. What’s not working? At this point in time, I’m sure you can identify one or two things that are not working quite as you had intended. Articulate them. Examine them carefully to determine what it is – specifically – that is falling short of your expectations.
  3. What action will you take in the next day/week/month to improve on what is not working? Identify one thing that you can do differently. Write it down, and keep it in front of you as you take steps to improve.

As you prepare for next week, take a little time to ask yourself these three simple – but powerful – questions. Commit to taking inspired action, and you will make progress toward your goal.
