Life is constantly changing. It has been said that life is a series of transitions. As children we move from home life into school. In school we move from elementary school to middle school to high school. After high school we go into the workforce, the armed services, or attend college. We graduate, get a good job, or move into a new job, move into a new town, find love, get married, raise a family, and so on and so on.
With so much change constantly taking place, it can be overwhelming. Fortunately there are people who are trained to help navigate all the transitions we face: coaches. A good coach can help you navigate transitions by providing a number of supports. Here are four that are key:
- Focus. During times of transition, it’s very easy to become scattered in thinking and vision. A coach can help you focus on what is important in the transition process.
- Affirmation. Transitions require times of reflection, and sometimes you may think, “This sounds crazy, but I’ve always wanted to . . . “ A coach can affirm your thinking which empowers you to move forward in meaningful ways.
- Planning. Successful navigation requires a plan. A coach can help you identify where you are, where you want to go, and assist in mapping the path.
- Feedback. Once you launch into your plan, you’ll need some type of information about how things are going. A coach can provide you with feedback from a different perspective, so that ultimately you are successful in navigating the transition.
I count it a privilege to have helped several people successfully make life and work transitions. As you look at what lies ahead, I encourage you to reach out to a coach to ask for some assistance. You will be glad you did!
